I. This course will be taught by Assistant Research Fellow Chang Rui-Sheng and Joint Appointed Assistant Professor of the Department of Aquaculture. In addition to lectures on professional knowledge, the course will also incorporate hands-on observation of algae under a microscope and in their natural environment, allowing learners to visualize the theoretical foundation and practical operations more concretely and gain a deeper understanding of algae.
II. Algae can be described as a group of organisms with the most diverse variations in size, color, and lifestyle, truly earning the title of "cross-boundary" masters. They are classified into different biological kingdoms. Even today, with the extensive use of molecular biological data in species classification, there remains considerable uncertainty in the classification of algae. Furthermore, algae have diverse applications in various research fields in the 21st century, including food and nutrition, feed and fertilizer, chemical products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, ecological environment, marine ranching, and even global warming, biofuels, green buildings, and bioplastics, all serving as materials for development and research. Despite the widespread use of algae, knowledge about them has not yet become common in our lives. Many people may not have even seen what common edible kelp looks like. This course will begin by discussing the value of algae and gradually introduce this group of organisms that are closely related to our lives.
