| Description: |
| I. | With a rich brushstroke style and proportions that defy convention, not only do the figures appear plump, but animals and fruits also swell, creating exaggerated yet smile-inducing artworks. These are the classic masterpieces of Colombian art master Fernando Botero. |
| II. | His "voluminous" style permeates all his creations, from animals, still lifes, and portraits to religious themes, showcasing a unique sense of humor that makes his art unforgettable at first glance and easily accessible to the audience. In his circus series, the lively atmosphere is often tinged with the melancholy of ordinary people. In his religious works, the nuns and priests are neither solemnly criticized nor devoutly praised; instead, through exaggerated forms and humorous brushstrokes, the satire of clergy is hidden within their round, massive bodies. His series paying homage to art masters further unleashes his distinctive style, transforming Western classical paintings into a novel visual surprise. |
| III. | With his unique rounded perspective and keen observation, Botero transforms the towns he has visited and the people and things he has encountered throughout his life into a series of meaningful creations. Beneath the seemingly simple surface lies a profound knowledge of art history and a spirit of perfect pursuit in lines, colors, and composition, making him one of the most distinctive and influential artists of our time. |
| IV. | This is a rare exhibition of original works focusing on Latin American art. It showcases the rich facets of Botero's art, encompassing oil paintings, sketches, watercolors, and sculptures, with a total of 118 pieces. We invite school teachers, students, and parents to experience the infinite charm of rounded healing from different aesthetic perspectives. |
| V. | Exhibition Highlights |
| (1) | "Latin America": Botero's art is deeply rooted in his life experiences in Colombia. After encountering Mexican art in 1956, he became increasingly focused on Latin America, incorporating the vibrant street colors and rich cultural life of his homeland into his creations. Musicians, nuns, and figures of authority, as well as daily life, all became sources of inspiration, rendered with humorous and delicate brushstrokes that create unique meanings through exaggerated proportions. |
| (2) | "Still Life Series": "The simplest forms are often the most difficult to depict." Botero's unique style originated from his still life creations. The mandolin he created in his youth, with its intentionally reduced soundhole, created an effect where the body of the instrument seemed to expand outwards. This led him to re-examine the relationship between proportion and volume, establishing his classic rounded aesthetic. From then on, his "volumetric" language began to take shape, permeating all his subjects. |
| (3) | "Bullfight & Circus": A brief experience at a bullfighting school in his youth, the dramatic colors and tense atmosphere of the bullring influenced Botero, prompting him to create a series of watercolors on the theme of bullfighting. The traveling circus he encountered in Mexico also became a subject for his paintings. The acrobats and clowns in his works, while full of dynamism, exude the unique melancholy of ordinary people amidst their vibrant presence, adding emotional depth beyond mere joy to the entire series. |
| (4) | "Versions & Religion": Botero pursued excellence through dialogue with the works of masters from a young age. His early experiences in Europe led him to create a series of works paying homage to art giants in his own unique style. Regardless of the original artist, the final presentation is unmistakably Botero's style—as he said, "Art is saying the same thing in different ways." For Botero, religion is not about doctrine but about exploring form, color, and atmosphere, reinterpreting and challenging existing norms with humor and satire. The series of female saints is particularly prominent. |
| (5) | "Mixed Media & Sculpture": In addition to oil paintings, Botero also used various media such as pencils, watercolors, charcoal, and pastels. In his hands, sketches are not just drafts but complete works, showcasing the precision of lines and the sensuality of forms. Botero began exploring sculpture in 1973, bringing the beauty of volume into three dimensions. For him, art belongs in public spaces, and he hoped his sculptures would bring a more direct and tangible aesthetic experience, bridging the gap between art and people. |
